When it comes to gifts for outdoorsy kids, I’m a big fan of those that can be used to grow them (as opposed to giving toys or knick-knacks that they will soon outgrow or tire of). I’m also a fan of the new trend that touts giving experiences rather than things. But let’s face it: when you’re a kid and you open a nice shiny box only to find a little piece of paper inside, a tiny bit of expectant joy dies inside you (trust me, I’ve been there)—even if that piece of paper does promise a fantastic adventure in the future.
So when compiling this idea list of gifts for outdoorsy kids, I tried to think of gifts that would not only equip them for great experiences in the outdoors, but that would also be fun to open. I also tried to consider things like practicality, house-cluttering potential, variety of ages, and the ol’ budget…because, well—I’m a mom.

Here’s what I came up with (click on pics or links to check prices):
1. ADVENTURE KIT
This one by Adventure Kidz for ages 3 and up contains binoculars, flashlight, magnifying glass, whistle, and compass in a nice compact little bag that can be used as a backpack. It’s also available in green and can be ordered on Amazon. If your kid is older, you can handpick a larger style backpack and exploration items separately.
2. FISHING POLE
Fishing is a great family activity, and usually once kids experience the excitement of getting a fish on their line, they’re hooked (no pun intended). If you already have all the tackle you need plus some to share, you’ll probably want to opt for just a single durable fishing pole. Otherwise, a starter kit makes a great gift and ensures they have everything they need to get started right away.

3. ROCK TUMBLER
There’s just something about kids and rocks. All the shapes and colors are fascinating and just beg to be put in pockets and brought home. This tumbler by National Geographic feeds the rock fetish, but also turns the rocks into pretties that can be used for things like filling vases and playing outdoor games.
4. OUTDOORS-THEMED BOOKS
What are your kids into? Wild animals, flower identification, hunting, fishing? Age-appropriate books that speak to their interests are always a win. Include a certificate for a class in that area of interest for an opportunity to explore the topic even more.

5. NATURE JOURNAL
Or let them write their own book by noting their outdoor adventures in a special journal. They will enjoy looking back at all the cool things they’ve experienced and their teacher will love that they’ve been honing their writing skills.
6. STAINLESS STEEL WATER BOTTLES
Staying hydrated is more fun when you have a cool water bottle to drink from, and they come in all kinds of great designs these days. Check out Yeti’s high-quality water bottles for kids.
7. STAR-GAZING SCOPE
An astronomical scope is a great way to stir a child’s galactic intrigue. Actually, star-gazing is fun for adults, too, and offers a good alternative to watching TV at night.
8. FANCY FOOTWEAR
Flippers for the water lovers, snowshoes for the snow birds, hiking shoes for trail hitters—get foot gear that will get them where they want to go. Pro mom tip: if you have boys and girls, choosing gender-neutral colors facilitates passing down to the next kid and stretching your investment.
9. CAMPING GEAR
We love camping as a family, and things like warm sleeping bags, marshmallow-roasting, and drinking hot chocolate around the fire make it even better!
10. SUNGLASSES
Complete their outdoorsy look (and protect those little eyes from the sun) with a pair of polarized sunglasses. Plus, they’ll be better able to take in all the great scenery if they’re not squinting.
One last idea: Pair your gift with a note that says something like, “Adventure awaits! I can’t wait to go [camping, fishing, exploring, etc.] with you.”
Happy gift-hunting!
