Today I woke up grumpy.
There are only ten days of rifle season remaining and I have yet to fill my buck tag. I’d really like to be out hunting right now, but #tinytotsathome.

I’m so thankful for the wonderful time spent hunting with my husband today. We had a busy week, so the opportunity to unwind, unplug, and unscramble my mom brain via God’s glorious mountains was such a gift.
Yesterday there was a buck in our yard. Not just a scrappy young one, but a good-sized muley that sported a decent set of antlers. My littles looked out and said, “Shoot it, Mom!” Continue reading “The Buck in the Yard”
“She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household…” -Prov. 31:15
I love this verse because not only does it speak to my hunter’s heart, but it speaks to the heart of every mama who has ever awakened in the pre-dawn hours to nurse her baby. Or pump. Or work a night shift in order to afford groceries. It speaks to the fact that God recognizes us and our efforts to take care of our families. Whether you’re dragging yourself out of bed, up a mountain, or out of a slump, know this: The sacrifices that you make in the dark do not go unseen.
Antelope is on the menu tonight at our house! It’s my favorite type of game meat, and kebabs are my favorite way to eat it. The kids and husband like them too, so that’s always a win. I love recipes like this that are “chunkeable”—meaning I can do sections of it throughout the day—because #toddlers. I whip up the marinade and start soaking the skewers during nap time (unless you’re lucky enough to have metal skewers); cut the meat and veggies while they’re having a snack; and put it all together when they’re absorbed with LEGOs or books. When the hubby gets home from work, it’s all ready to be grilled and served with steamed rice.
The marinade is my adaptation of a few different ones I’ve tried.
2. Place 10-12 bamboo skewers in water to soak.
3. Chunk your meat, pineapple, and veggies into 1-inch cubes. Place the meat and half of the marinade in a Ziplock or bowl and marinate for at least two hours.
4. Skewer the meat, pineapple, and veggies according to your preference and brush the rest of the marinade over everything.
5. Place on grill and cook for approximately 10 minutes, rotating skewers at the halfway point.
Enjoy!
In hunting, as in life, we have to pick our shots.
When an opportunity presents itself, sometimes we have mere seconds to decide whether or not . . .
▪ It’s too risky
▪ Our family needs it as much as we want it
▪ The timing is right
▪ It’s meant for someone else
▪ We’re ready to both take the shot and carry the load
Today I chose to pass on two small muley bucks. The hubs downed one right before my opportunity came (and brought home an antelope last week), so we weren’t desperate for meat. We also weren’t desperately in love with the idea of dragging out not one, but two animals after a grueling 2-mile hike in which we gained 2,200 feet of elevation. What comes down must also go up. . . on someone’s back, game cart, or pack animal.
So I passed, but I have no regrets. Spending a sunny day in the mountains with my number one hunting buddy was glorious. And maybe—just maybe—I’ll have another chance at the monster buck that got away from me last weekend.

Rope, knife, first-aid kit . . . breast pump. Check. The things mamas pack around out of necessity. This is the third year running that I’ve toted a pump. But it—the adventure, quality husband time, the hunt—is worth it. Cheers to everyone hitting the hills tomorrow (and here’s to having weaned children the next time around)!
