Easy Crockpot Venison BBQ

I’m the type of person who likes to have a solid game plan for weekday dinners. On busy days, I rely on the crock pot to save myself from dealing with four family members who become rather hangry if not fed on time. Crockpot venison BBQ is perfect for those kinds of days.

Yesterday was “one of those days” and I was so thankful to come home to the delicious aroma of barbecue venison. It’s super easy to throw together.

*12/3/2018 Update: I shot a rutting muley buck this season and his meat ended up being pretty tough. I used a couple pieces of round steaks for this recipe and it turned out perfectly tender and delicious!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs venison meat (stew cuts, rounds, or chops)
  • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the meat by cutting into large chunks. You can also slice it very thinly while slightly frozen (slicing against the grain) if you'd rather skip the shredding step later on.

  2. Layer the onions on the bottom of the Crockpot and toss in the meat.

  3. Mix together the sauce, water, mustard, vinegar, and spices and pour over onions and meat.

  4. Cook on low for four hours. (For best results, shred meat at hour three and continue cooking for the final hour. If not possible, shred the meat just before eating.) Ladle on top of rice or Kaiser rolls and enjoy!

    1. No, I don’t soak the meat in anything. After it’s thawed, I give it a quick rinse under cool water and throw it in.

Excellent. Making this again! Hubby loves it and asked me to make again. Thank you for this excellent recipe.

  2. Made this today and my husband and I thought this was very good. Followed the recipe with minimal substitions only because I didn’t have a couple of the ingredients. Used smoked paprika instead of regular paprika; Kimchi seasoning instead of the cayenne powder. Served with mashed potatoes, cooked greens and cheddar cheese biscuits. I already shared the recipe with our son.. Thank you!
