This morning I did a little “group therapy” as hunters like to call it, and was struck by how much stillness it takes to make a good shot.
Strength, good form, and lining everything up exactly right are all important; but I miss the mark every darn time I neglect to take a second to steady myself and just. be. still.
It occurred to me that decisions are like that. The outcome is almost always regret when we decide to spew words out of anger, make an impulsive choice out of pride, or release an arrow out of haste. But when we take a moment to quiet our bodies and emotions, we become more aware of our surroundings, in tune to God’s whispers, steadier in our aim.
I needed this little archery lesson today, because more composure in my life would be a blessed thing. Maybe in yours, too? Let’s do it together—shoot, speak, sprint, and release the full force of our energy for good. But first.
Let’s be still.
