I’ve been a fan of Mystery Ranch packs since the day I discovered they make women’s hunting packs in XS. As a petite person, I appreciate that—especially when I’m four miles into a grueling hunt and don’t have the energy to deal with an ill-fitting pack (been there, done that). So, when the opportunity came to put the Mystery Ranch In and Out 19 Daypack to the test, I was of course delighted.
The pack arrived just in time for hunting season and I decided to use it for shorter whitetail hunts that don’t require tons of gear or a frame for packing out meat (my Mystery Ranch Women’s Pop-Up is great for those more intense elk or mule deer hunts). I packed it with a few necessities—knife, tags, first aid kit, extra gloves, snacks, water—set out, and noted the following:
FIT
Mystery Ranch seems to excel in making packs that are a pleasure to wear. The In and Out 19 straps are fully adjustable and fits my daughter, husband, and myself comfortably. Being used to the hip straps on my Pop-Up pack, I did feel like there was something missing; but as long as you don’t overload the In and Out, the hip straps aren’t a necessity.
PORTABILITY
Not only is the In and Out 19 extremely lightweight, but it’s also self-stuffing. It neatly folds into a pouch not much bigger than my hand, which makes it easy to slip it into another pack or large pocket. This is a cool feature that I plan to utilize for longer hunts or backpacking trips. Click on the video at the end of this post to see how it folds into itself.
STYLE
I like the overall style of this pack. It’s light without feeling flimsy, and has plenty of pockets. As for color options, there are plenty of those, as well. While some may be disappointed that it doesn’t come in camo, I don’t mind at all, as I’m not the kind of person who wants every piece of hunting gear to be camouflage. Besides, I plan on using the pack for hiking, as well, so I chose I chose simple and earthy hummus. It also comes in black, aura gray, mineral gray, hunter orange, pacific blue, and paprika.
FINAL VERDICT
I enjoyed using the In and Out 19 this season and have big plans for this little pack—cross-country skiing this winter, shed hunting in the spring, hiking in the summer, and hunting in the fall. It’s easy to wipe clean (I may have gotten a bunch of mud on it the very first day of use) and I’m hoping that it’s as durable as my other Mystery Ranch pack has proved to be! Check back next year for an update 😉
